What happens on an AI recruiter phone call?

A step by step guide to the call: what the AI says first, what it asks, what you can say at any point, and what the hiring team gets afterwards.

AI RECRUITERPHONE CALLSTEP BY STEP

An AI recruiter phone call is a job conversation led by an AI for a named company. On a MetaDay call, the AI says it is the AI representative of the company, asks before keeping a written transcript (no audio is recorded), tells you about the role, answers your questions and books your interview. A person makes every decision.

If an AI recruiter just called you, or you have a call booked and want to know what to expect, this page walks through it step by step: what you will hear first, what the AI asks, what you can say at any point, how long it takes, which languages it speaks, and what the hiring team sees afterwards. We use MetaDay's real call as the example, because we know exactly how it behaves.

Three things to know before you pick up: it will tell you it is an AI, it will ask before keeping anything, and it will never decide whether you get the job.

What the rules say about AI calls

Start with the baseline that applies to every AI recruiter, not just ours.

In the EU, Article 50 of the AI Act requires AI systems that interact directly with people to be designed so those people are told they are interacting with an AI, unless that is obvious. That duty applies from 2 August 2026.

In the UK, data protection law gives you the right to be informed: an organisation that collects your personal data must tell you what it does with it, why, how long it keeps it and who it shares it with, at the time it collects it from you.

So a legitimate AI call does two things early: it tells you it is an AI, and it tells you what happens to what you say. Here is how that sounds in practice.

Step by step: what you hear on a MetaDay call

1. It tells you who it is

The AI introduces itself as "the AI representative of [company]", using the name of the company that is hiring. You know from the first sentence that you are talking to an AI, and whose AI it is. It never claims to be human, and if you ask, it tells you it is an AI.

MetaDay's AI phone calls are for candidates who have shown interest in a role. The company is named, so you can always check it.

2. It asks before keeping anything

Before anything is kept, the AI asks you, in these words:

"May I keep a written transcript of this call for the hiring team? No audio is recorded, and a person at [company] makes all decisions. Is that OK?"

If you say yes, a written transcript is kept for the hiring team. If you say no, no transcript is kept. Either way, no audio is recorded.

3. If it is not a good time, it calls back

Driving, at work, in the middle of dinner? Say so. The AI asks when it should call you back. There is no pressure to talk now.

4. It tells you about the role

This is the main part of the call. The AI explains the role and the company that is hiring, so you can decide whether it is worth your time. Think of it as the conversation a good recruiter has before anyone asks you for anything.

5. It answers your questions

Ask what you would ask a person: what the job involves, where it is, how the hiring process works, what happens next. The AI answers your questions about the role.

6. It aligns expectations

The AI checks that what you want and what the company offers line up, for example on the role, the terms and when you could start. It may ask about your experience and what you are looking for. The point is simple: nobody should reach an interview only to find out the basics do not fit.

7. It books the interview

If you both want to go ahead, the AI books your interview straight into the hiring team's calendar. No back and forth over email to find a slot.

8. It sends the privacy notice

The AI sends you the privacy notice by email or WhatsApp, so you have in writing how your data is used.

What you can say on the call

You stay in control of the conversation. These are the things candidates most often want to say, and what happens when you say them on a MetaDay call.

You sayWhat happens
"No, please don't keep a transcript."No transcript is kept. No audio is recorded either way.
"This isn't a good time."The AI asks when to call you back.
"Am I talking to a real person?"The AI tells you it is an AI. It never claims to be human.
"I'd rather speak to a person."You know which company is hiring, and a person there makes all decisions. Ask for a contact at the company.
"I'm not interested." or "Stop."You can end the call whenever you like, as with any phone call.
"Who decides if I get the job?"A person at the company. The AI never makes the hiring decision.

How long does an AI recruiter call take?

It depends on the conversation. If you have lots of questions, it runs longer. If the role is clearly not for you, it is quick. And if you only have a minute when it rings, tell the AI it is not a good time and it will ask when to call back.

Which languages does the AI speak?

MetaDay runs calls and interviews in five languages: English, Dutch, German, French and Spanish.

What the AI does not do

Being honest about the limits matters as much as the features.

  • It does not record audio. At most, a written transcript, and only with your yes.
  • It does not pretend to be human. It introduces itself as an AI and says so if asked.
  • It does not decide whether you get the job. A person at the company makes all decisions.
  • It does not ask you for money. You never pay to be considered for a job. The employer pays MetaDay per open role.

Is the call real? A quick check

A real AI recruiter call names the company, says it is an AI, and never asks for money, bank details, ID numbers or passwords. If anything feels off, end the call, find the company's website yourself and contact the company directly. The UK's Take Five campaign lists the common signs of a job scam, including recruiters who do not name a company or role, upfront fees for a "trial task" and pressure to act fast. For employers: what you get after the call

The call is one step in the hiring run. You brief Ryan, the AI, once, on Slack or in the app. Ryan builds the run inside the boundaries you set, you approve it, and it goes live. Scout ranks candidates, outreach goes out by email, WhatsApp and LinkedIn, and the AI calls the candidates who show interest.

After each call, this is what your team has:

  • A written transcript, when the candidate agreed. No audio is ever recorded.
  • Interviews booked into your team's calendar, with no scheduling back and forth.
  • Candidates who know what they are signing up for, because the role, the terms and the start date were discussed before the interview.
  • Candidates who were told it was an AI, asked before a transcript was kept, and sent the privacy notice by email or WhatsApp.
  • The rest of the run: structured AI interviews with evidence, offer negotiation, and the top three finalists sent to your hiring manager with the evidence. Your team makes the final decision.

The AI Recruiter plan includes 30 AI phone calls and 10 AI interviews per open role per month, from $299 per open role per month billed yearly, with no success fee. See AI recruiter pricing for every option.

Does it work? World Mobile went from open role to signed hire in one working day, with its own team making the final decision. MetaDay is aligned with the EU AI Act, and our guide to AI hiring laws in 2026 sets out what applies where. To see a real hiring run, book a demo.

Common questions

Why did an AI recruiter call me?

Companies use an AI recruiter to talk to candidates about open roles. MetaDay's AI calls candidates who have shown interest in a role, and it always says which company it represents. If you are unsure the company is real, check the job on its own website before sharing anything.

Does an AI recruiter record the call?

On a MetaDay call, no audio is recorded. The AI asks whether it may keep a written transcript for the hiring team, and keeps one only if you say yes.

Will the AI pretend to be a person?

A legitimate one will not. MetaDay's AI introduces itself as the AI representative of the company and never claims to be human. In the EU, the AI Act requires AI systems that talk to people to make clear they are AI.

Can I ask the AI to call me back later?

Yes. If it is not a good time, the AI asks when to call you back. You can also end the call at any time.

Does the AI decide if I get the job?

No. A person at the company makes all decisions. The AI tells you about the role, answers your questions, aligns expectations and books your interview with the hiring team.

What languages can the AI speak on the call?

MetaDay runs calls and interviews in English, Dutch, German, French and Spanish.

How can I tell if an AI recruiter call is a scam?

A real call names the company, says it is an AI and never asks for money, bank details, ID numbers or passwords. If anything feels off, end the call, find the company's website yourself and contact the company directly.
